UC Irvine Extension Awards 1,400 Certificates in 73 Programs for the 2010-2011 Academic Year
Graduation Ceremony Honored Certificate Recipients and Award Winners
IRVINE, CA, June 24, 2011 /Technical PR News/ -- The University of California, Irvine Extension issued 1,400 certificates of completion for the 2010-2011 academic year during its graduation ceremony on June 15, 2011. Certificates were awarded in 73 program categories - with 90 students receiving more than one certificate.
"Our graduation ceremony demonstrates the vast number of opportunities UC Irvine Extension offers and the commitment of the institution to provide the skills necessary for adult professionals today," said Gary W. Matkin, Ph.D., Dean of Continuing Education, Summer Session and Distance Learning at UC Irvine. "As we honor the hard work of our continuing education students, we also recognize and celebrate the impact they will make locally, nationally and internationally."
In addition to honoring this year's graduates, UC Irvine Extension also bestowed additional awards. Fundacão Getulio Vargas and Strong Consultoria were given the "Partnership Award," for their long-term extraordinary educational relationships with UC Irvine Extension. The partnership started 12 years ago when 19 Brazilian business executives attended UC Irvine Extension. As of today, the institution has now hosted over 1,000 executives from Brazil, and includes collaborations that extend to several online courses and a Project Management certificate program offered completely in Portuguese in Brazil.
UC Irvine Extension also awarded three former students with its Alumni Achievement Award. Each recipient has demonstrated how the education and skills gained from a UC Irvine Extension certificate program were applied in a distinctive and notable way. Award recipients include:
• Khetam Dahi, a graduate of the Reading Certificate Program, obtained a full-time teaching position at East Los Angeles Community College. Her knowledge has qualified her to teach within any discipline in the English department and even participate in the overall growth of the college's reading curriculum.
• Cynthia Carbajal completed the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Specialized Studies program and incorporated this knowledge as an elementary school master teacher at Capistrano Connections Academy. She is also the first instructor for UC Irvine Extension's new Virtual Teacher Certificate program.
• Finally, Kevin Watson, a graduate of the Business Analyst Certificate Program, became a member of the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA), one of our educational partners, while in the program. His membership helped him earn a Senior Business Analyst position at Hoag Hospital. He has since been promoted to a management position and continues to put his business analyst knowledge to work throughout the hospital.
The final award for the evening, "Student Achievement Award," was presented to Richard Funes - for his demonstrated extraordinary commitment to completing his program of study. He completed the Oracle Database Administration Certificate Program with a 4.0 GPA while overcoming a variety of obstacles, including the fact that he is blind. Living in the Los Angeles area, Funes made the long commute to UCI to attend classes and used screen readers and other technologies to convert text into synthetic speech.
